An energy corridor between the UK and Brazil
Collectively, more than 80 years of in-country partnerships, mobilised public capital and demonstration projects designed to scale across the continent.
Brazil is one of the most consequential renewable energy markets in the world, and one of the hardest for outsiders to enter credibly. Our team has spent years building the relationships, institutional access and project structures that make UK industrial deployment in Brazil work: 18 co-operation and partnership agreements signed with Brazilian solar developers in a single programme of activity, £700,000 of UK public capital channelled into a flagship demonstration project designed to scale across the continent, and a working footprint that now anchors how Intrinsic Energy structures international energy mandates.
A network on the ground in Brazil
In 2017, at the EU-sponsored Low Carbon Business Action matchmaking conference in Fortaleza, our team signed 18 co-operation and partnership agreements with Brazilian solar PV developers in a single programme of activity, covering applications in, among others, agriculture, telecommunications and ports.
The agreements established a working network of in-country counterparties spanning multiple Brazilian states and gave us a ready-built commercial footprint to deploy UK technology, finance and project development capability into.
UK public capital into a flagship programme
Building on that footprint, we initiated contact with the UK Cross-Government Prosperity Fund, authored the grant application and led stakeholder engagement across UK government, in-country institutional partners and the technical delivery team. Total raised: £700,000.
The award anchored a key component of a biofuels, sustainable cultivation and reforestation value chain in Brazil, namely a demonstration biodiesel facility designed to be replicated across the country and the wider continent. It set the template for how we now structure cross-border industrial collaboration: non-dilutive public funding at the front end, technical credibility from the UK side, execution muscle on the ground.
Private capital into low-energy construction in Brazil
In 2010, our team carried out stakeholder engagement and raised finance for the importation of insulated concrete formwork (ICF) components, for construction of a clinic and social welfare centre at a Federal Government-backed social housing scheme in Rio de Janeiro. ICF, composed of interlocking polystyrene blocks filled with reinforced concrete, is fast and inexpensive with high thermal insulation, meaning air conditioning uses a fraction of the power required in conventional buildings. The team was awarded the Brazil Environment Prize (Prêmio Brasil de Meio Ambiente) for this work.
What this means for our partners today
These outcomes are not history. They are the operating capabilities we bring to every Intrinsic Energy mandate:
- Network density in Brazil. A long-held, actively maintained network of operating partners across the Brazilian renewables sector and the institutional architecture that surrounds them.
- Origination of public capital. Identifying, qualifying and winning non-dilutive UK government funding for international industrial programmes.
- Grant authorship. Writing competitive applications that withstand multi-departmental scrutiny and translate technical projects into the commercial and policy language funders need to see.
- Stakeholder leadership. Coordinating UK government, overseas institutional counterparties and technical teams toward a single signed outcome.
This is the engine Intrinsic Energy runs new programmes through.

Brazilian partnership network
Agriculture, telecommunications, and ports: three sectors that rarely sit together in a single solar PV pipeline. Eighteen agreements in a single programme.
In 2017, at the EU-sponsored Low Carbon Business Action matchmaking conference in Fortaleza, members of our team signed 18 co-operation and partnership agreements with Brazilian solar PV developers across exactly that mix, on behalf of a UK battery energy storage systems (BESS) supplier.
Why Fortaleza, why 2017
The Low Carbon Business Action in Brazil programme was an EU-funded initiative designed to connect European clean technology companies with Brazilian counterparts, structured around curated matchmaking events in regional hubs rather than the usual São Paulo or Rio circuit. Fortaleza, capital of Ceará, was a deliberate choice. The state had become one of Brazil's most active renewables markets, with strong solar irradiance, an established wind sector, and a regulatory environment increasingly receptive to distributed and behind-the-meter generation. Arriving with a clear BESS proposition into a developer community already comfortable with intermittent generation gave the conversations a sharper commercial edge than a cold market entry would have allowed.
The sectoral spread
The breadth of the 18 agreements was deliberate rather than opportunistic. Each of the three sectors carried a distinct load profile, regulatory environment, and route to market, and securing developer relationships across all of them gave the UK supplier a genuinely diversified Brazilian footprint rather than a single-market bet.
Agricultural projects offered scale and rural land availability, with strong alignment between solar generation profiles and irrigation, cold storage, and processing demand. Telecommunications projects centred on resilience and off-grid or grid-edge sites, where storage paired with solar provided a credible alternative to diesel back-up for remote infrastructure. Ports brought concentrated industrial loads, complex grid interfaces, and significant decarbonisation pressure, particularly as Brazilian export terminals began to face scope 3 scrutiny from European and Asian buyers.
Taken together, the portfolio gave the UK supplier exposure to three demand cases that behaved very differently across the day, the season, and the regulatory cycle. That spread reduced concentration risk and meant that lessons learned in one sector could inform pricing, sizing, and contract structures in the others.
What the network produced
The 18 agreements were not transactional. They were framed as co-operation and partnership instruments, intended to govern joint development, technical collaboration, and route to market activity over a sustained period. In practice, they created a working map of Brazilian solar developers across the Northeast and beyond, with named counterparties, established commercial terms, and a shared understanding of how UK technology and Brazilian project origination could be combined.
That map proved durable. Developer relationships that began at Fortaleza continued to inform commercial activity well after the original conference, and the operating familiarity built across Brazilian regulatory, grid, and supply chain conditions became a quiet asset in its own right.
Continuity into Intrinsic Energy
Intrinsic Energy now draws on those foundations as it develops its own Brazil-anchored programme across supply chain, energy, and renewables. The network, the sectoral intelligence, and the working knowledge of how Brazilian developers structure deals, manage grid connection risk, and approach offtake all carry directly into the company's current activity.
For Intrinsic Energy, this is not a retrospective credential. It is a live operating advantage: a head start measured in years of accumulated developer trust, regulatory pattern recognition, and on-the-ground commercial intelligence that competitors entering Brazil today would need to build from scratch.

Building a digital business twin
A national, end to end intelligent operations platform. Fifteen capability modules, one data fabric, remote control of every business unit from a single national operations centre.
The challenge
The business was scaling fast, running mixed delivery models and a substantial site based workforce across the UK. It was operating on a fragmented stack: accounting software, project spreadsheets, separate timesheet and procurement logs, paper site diaries, and a small CRM.
Project P and L was assembled by hand after month end. Design changes happened verbally and were captured days later. Client reporting was a weekly PDF cycle. Field crews were under and over utilised in parallel. Materials sat unused at one site while being ordered for another. Lone worker safety relied on manual check ins.
The solution
A digital business twin: a single intelligent platform that mirrors every operational, financial, commercial, and human aspect of the business in near real time, controlled remotely from a national operations centre. Three properties define it:
- Mirroring. Current structured representation of every operational, financial, and commercial state.
- Simulation. What if scenarios returned in minutes.
- Actuation. Decisions flow back into operational systems automatically.
Operating philosophy
The AI backbone makes the business more efficient, not smaller. Productivity gains have been reinvested into faster, more profitable growth and into job creation. The platform removes the work people should not be doing in the first place: rekeying numbers, chasing emails for status, reconciling spreadsheets, writing the same Friday report. This frees the same people for work that creates value.
Headcount grew 28 percent across the deployment period, fourteen new roles were created, training spend per person rose 41 percent, apprenticeship intake doubled, zero redundancies were attributable to platform automation.
Architecture
Five layers. Lightweight systems of record (cloud accounting, project management, unified field app, procurement, client portal). An Azure data fabric with a canonical data model. A library of analytical and machine learning models. Three experiences: the field app, the national operations dashboard, and the client portal. Human in the loop on every consequential recommendation.
The fifteen modules
- Project cost control. Earned value, anomaly detection, daily cost to complete.
- Financial management. Consolidated reporting, Monte Carlo cash forecasting, working capital optimisation.
- Profitability analysis. Margin at project, crew, customer, service line level with driver attribution.
- Resource management and geo aware deployment. Geo fenced site time capture, mixed integer optimisation of crew schedules.
- Supply chain and predictive procurement. Live stock visibility, automated redeployment, predictive demand against design changes.
- Modelled vs actual variance engine. Bayesian recalibration, sensitivity analysis, continuous learning.
- AI driven realignment. Daily prioritised recommendation feed for portfolio, pricing, and crew composition.
- Timesheet, expense, holiday, absence. Single source of truth, geo populated timesheets, automated expense and policy checking.
- Field to HQ communications app. Structured, accountable two way channel, offline first, voice and photo capture.
- Emergency SOS management. One button SOS, lone worker check ins, automatic protocol activation, full evidenced record.
- Health and safety management. Real time incident upload, image classification, evidenced workflows, regulator ready reporting.
- Live on site design change. Site staff mark up live drawings, predicted cost and schedule impact in minutes.
- Live project planning and tracking. Single live critical path per project, scenario simulation, cross project view.
- Live client management. Real time portal with photo, video, design evidence, immutable audit trail.
- AI orchestration and agentic integration. Bidirectional links to finance, drives, and operational systems with AI writeback to source documents. Outlook and calendar orchestration showing where each person should be and when, with daily morning briefings. Live thread per project, client, supplier, and person.

Optimisation of a hybrid renewable plant on UK farmland
Solar PV, BESS, ground source heat pumps and air source heat pumps integrated as a single working asset, optimised by a live digital twin.
The challenge
A working farm in the UK integrated a large-scale solar PV array, battery energy storage system (BESS), ground source heat pump network, and air source heat pumps to power on-site operations, export electricity, and supply heat to neighbouring glasshouses.
While the technical concept was strong, traditional P50 and P90 yield models assessed each technology in isolation. This failed to capture real-world interactions between solar generation, battery cycling, ground loop temperature drift, and heat pump efficiency losses during cold weather. The resulting conservatism significantly eroded projected IRR and inflated insurance premiums, making it difficult to secure favourable financing.
The solution
A live predictive optimisation platform was deployed, integrating real-time data from inverters, battery systems, heat pumps, and weather forecasts. Using advanced forecasting and a reinforcement learning agent within a digital twin, the system optimised battery dispatch and heat pump scheduling to maximise revenue and efficiency.
Continuous back-testing of forecasts against actual performance identified key performance gaps, notably higher-than-expected panel soiling, faster ground loop cooling, and greater defrost losses on air source heat pumps. These insights enabled refined operational strategies and a far more robust financial model.
The outcome
A stronger bankable case, improved insurance terms, higher projected returns, and a reusable platform now being deployed on future UK sites. The work also informed a new template for how hybrid renewable assets should be modelled at financial close, with co-dependencies between technologies treated as a primary input rather than a downstream adjustment.
